First, “manual” does not mean “a cuff you wrap”

Is a manual blood pressure monitor more accurate?
It can be accurate when a trained person uses maintained equipment correctly. Every word in that sentence matters. A drifting aneroid gauge, fast deflation, missed sounds, a wrong cuff, or an operator who is rusty can erase the theoretical advantage a buyer thought they were purchasing.
A validated automatic monitor can also be accurate, while reducing errors tied to listening, dial reading, and simultaneous valve control. The World Health Organization’s technical guidance for automated cuff devices says manual measurement has gradually been replaced because of mercury concerns, poor calibration and improper use of aneroid devices in practice, and the superior consistent accuracy of validated automated devices. That last point is the guardrail. Automatic is not a validation result. Validation belongs to an exact model, often for a stated population and cuff range. Six real-home situations that can change the answer
An automatic model is usually the cleaner choice because the person can complete a reading without a second trained operator. Test the cuff, controls, display, and record step with that person, not only with the adult child who is shopping.
A maintained manual setup may be reasonable. Ask what happens when that spouse is away or unwell. An automatic device may preserve a backup routine and the patient’s independence.
